University of Hong Kong and co-organized by MEIIA, a public seminar
on "Hign Performance Manufacturing and Supply Chain Excellence" was
held at PolyU room Y416 on Jan 26, 2007. The seminar attracted over
65 audiences with a "FULL HOUSE" situation.
The MC -
Prof. Jeff Yeung, Director of Supply Chain Management Research Center, Li
& Fung Instituteof Supply Chain
Management and Logistics, CUHK, officiated the seminar at
2:20 pm.
Dr. Waiman Cheung - Director, Li & Fung Institute of Supply Chain Management
and Logistics, CUHK, delivered a welcome remarks, and Mr. Benny Lam
- Chairman of MEIIA also delivered an opening speech with
introduction of MEIIA.

The first talked -
High Performance Manufacturing: Comparison of
USA, Europe and Asia, was delivered by
Prof. Barbara Flynn, Indiana University, she shared with audiences the latest
finding from the
High Performance Manufacturing project and compared the best
practices and performance among different countries.
The second talk -
Supply Chain Integration in China, was
delivered by
Prof. Xiande Zhao, Chinese University of Hong Kong. He
discussed the different types of supply chain
integration (SCIs) and the factors that influence SCIs. These
factors include power, trust and relationship commitment.
He showed the audiences the current status of SCIs and the impacts
of SCIs on firm performance based the survey results of over 600
companies in Hong Kong and Mainland Chinaand the empirical
evidence for the impacts of SCLs. He also demonstrated how
companies can achieve competitive advances through SCIs using some
local cases.


A coffee break was arrangeed after two talks, this was also
a good networking time for participants.

The third talk -
Cross Company
Re-engineering for Supply Chain Collaboration of Polo, Luen Thai,
& Ruentex,
was delivered by Dr. John Romagna, Senior Vice President, Luen Thai Group. He briefly
summarized an effort in cross company reengineering to achieve
“supply chain integration”, among Polo Ralph Lauren, one of the
world’s most successful brands, Luen Thai, on of the world’s
largest garment manufacturer’s, and Ruentex, on the world’s most
sophisticated woven fabric suppliers. Enabling conditions, process,
and outcomes/status were
discussed.
Lastly, a panel discussion was moderated by Dr. Waiman Cheung
with the three speakers, Prof. Jeff Yeung, Mr. Benny Lam and
Mr. Daniel T.Olson,
SVP & Chief Executive Officer, Merix Asia Ltd.
This was an interactive session for exchanging
views and opinions between academic researchers and industry
practitioners.The
panellists discussed how to apply global best practices in Hong
Kong and
address problems and challenges facing manufacturing
companiesin the PRD.
Participants raised questions and also share their views actively.
The seminar sucessfully ended by 6:00 pm. A networking
dinner followed at the Fous Seas Restaurant, 14/F., Li Ka Shing
Tower, PolyU.
